This ONLINE course emphasizes basic life drawing skills in gesture, contour, and value (light and shadow). It is designed to teach students the key skills necessary to render the figure in three dimensions. Instruction in body structure and proportion is included. You will be working with models on Zoom. Class sessions will include live demonstrations as well as slide presentations, coupled with guided drawing exercises. There will also be opportunities to provide students with some personal feedback and guidance.   

Note: Introduction to Drawing or some prior drawing experience is recommended but not essential.


Summer 2021:8 weeks: Base Tuition: $325 + Model Fee: $100 = $425

TSA will deliver this course using ZOOM. Prior to the course session, you will receive an invitation for the session(s) via email. You'll need a laptop, desktop or tablet, internet connection with good bandwidth and headset (either wired or wireless). Notes: Instructor Thomas Hendry is a Toronto-based artist and has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 1996. His drawings, shown in numerous exhibitions, use the means of traditional art to create contemporary images, images that address the beauty, mystery and complexity embodied in the human form. In addition to teaching at TSA, Thomas is an instructor at Sheridan College and has taught at The Haliburton School of Fine Arts, the AGO Gallery School, OCAD Outreach Program and the Toronto District School Board.

What you will learn

Materials to Bring

  • Willow or Vine Charcoal - one stick, (roughly pencil thickness), medium hardness
  • Black conté crayon  - HB best, but others are okay
  • Red-brown drawing sticks. (Gallery brand has sets of 6 earth tone chalks)
  • Newsprint 18 x 24", 2 pads of 40 sheets each
  • Kneadable eraser
  • Couple of bulldog clips
  • Board to back up your paper pad
