• Introduction-Intermediate
  • Painting

This ONLINE course introduces classical techniques of portrait painting, focused on realism. Students may use oils or acrylics. The instructor will introduce the materials she uses (oils) and provide insight as to her choices. She will demonstrate techniques and students will work along with her through each stage of the painting, from a basic block-in of big masses, to the final rendered painting.

Demonstrations will focus on two main projects: a single session portrait painting (Ala Prima- wet on wet technique) and a sustained portrait painting introducing the technique of Piambura.

Along the way, you will learn foundational painting and gain insights and understanding of the form, the importance of value, and the selection and use of color. This ONLINE course is designed to be either a stand alone course to learn the basics of Classical Portrait painting or as a follow-up/companion course to 017 ONLINE Classical Portrait Drawing. It is ideal for students with some portrait drawing and/or painting background.

Note: There will be no class on August 2, 2021 for the Civic Holiday.

Notes: Instructor Anahita Akhavan is a Toronto-based artist and has been teaching at TSA since summer 2018. Previously, she taught the Fundamentals of Painting and Drawing at the University of Saskatchewan. Akhavan’s practice ranges from figurative abstract painting to collage, drawing and photography. She draws her subject matter from fragments of the human condition: identity; social roles of "the self" in multi-layered constructed surreal spaces. She has been featured in both solo and group exhibitions in Iran and Canada.
