Fundamental Drawing for Teens (Ages 14-17)

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing, including contour, gesture, value, perspective, foreshortening, surface treatment, and composition. Emphasis will be placed on learning to see and experience the world from the artist’s viewpoint. Classes will be structured combinations of shorter exercises and longer, more developed drawings. A variety of wet and dry drawing media will be used.

12 week: Base Tuition: $495 + Materials Fee: $40 = Total: $535

What you will learn

  • In a professional studio atmosphere students will learn to draw with wet and dry media on various supports including charcoal, pastel, pencil, ink and watercolour.
  • Through traditional and experimental methods students will draw from life (model), objects, scenes and imagination learning about line, contour, texture, value, negative and positive space, perspective, colour and composition.
  • Demonstrations of materials and their application and introductions to various artists working in the field of drawing will help students to place their own creations in a contemporary and historical context.
  • Individual and group critiques as well as showcasing their work will help students to improve their skills and learn about the importance of process in art making.

Materials to Bring

  • Pad of Cartridge Paper (18” x 24”)
  • Assorted Pencils – F, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Box of Willow Charcoal (mixed sizes)
  • Ink Pen (0.8)
  • 3 watercolour brushes (2 round, 1 flat)
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Kneadable Eraser
  • Gum Eraser
  • Blending Stick (medium size)
  • Scissors
  • Two bulldog clips (or large binder clips)
  • Drawing Board 18" x 24"  
  • Optional: portfolio carrying case or storage tube, old shirt or apron
