  • Painting

Impressionism is an extremely popular historical style. Characteristics of Impressionist painting include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. Short, thick strokes of paint are used to quickly capture the essence of the subject, rather than its details. Paint is often applied in an impasto manner (painting thickly so it stands out from the surface). Students will look at various acrylic techniques for emulating the Impressionist experience both historical and contemporary.
