Based in colour theory and the primary colour palette, this hands-on course focuses on developing proficient and accurate colour mixing. Through structured exercises and practice, students will develop their ability to make intuitive choices regarding saturation, temperature and value and implement using practical applications.

Oil or acrylic paints in tubes.

NB: Names of colours vary with different brands of paint. This list represents the most common names for fairly pure, warm and cool tones of each of the 3 primary colours (red, yellow, blue). Pure cadmiums and cobalts are very expensive - buy the hues, they are cheap and mix well. Inexpensive paint brands that don’t include cadmium hues will have the same colour under different names, you can pick by comparing the colour to some expensive cadmiums of another brand. No Liquitex.

Basic Colours:

  • Reds: Cadmium red light (hue), Cadmium dark (hue), Alizarin Crimson
  • Blues: Cobalt blue (hue), Ultramarine blue, Phthalo Blue
  • Yellows: Cadmium yellow light (hue), Cadmium yellow middle (hue), Cadmium Orange
  • Titanium White: large tube
  • Brushes: Inexpensive, long handled, stiff bristle #2, 3, 4, 6 Bright (flat)
  • Canvas paper pad; size: 12" x 16" or larger
  • Pad of palette sheets
  • Beige Masking tape

OILS ONLY:

  • Odourless Mineral Spirits
