This class is designed to introduce students to hand-building and throwing with clay on the pottery wheel. Students will be able to make a number of pieces that can be functional, decorative or sculptural. A basic understanding of the ceramic process will be covered, from wedging to firing. Skills that will be acquired during the the class will include: coil, slab building, wheel throwing as well as finishing techniques such as trimming, attaching, decoration and glazing. This course is great for beginners as well as students with previous clay experience.


 940 -  Winter 2020: 10 Weeks: Base Tuition: $422 + Materials Fee: $45 = Total: $467

Notes: Materials Fee includes a bag of Cone 6, stoneware clay (20lbs) and all firing, use of glazes and tools. Only clay from TSA may be used.

What you will learn

  • Working with (water based) clay as an expressive medium to create functional, decorative and/or sculptural pieces.
  • Handbuilding techniques including pinching, coils, slabs, draping and more.
  • Introduction to throwing on a pottery wheel (9 pottery wheels).
  • Surface decoration such as texture, underglaze techniques and glazing techniques.

  • Your own apron (clay is messy)
  • Paint brushes - new for detailed painting/worn brushes for different techniques
