In this course, students will explore abstract painting and thinking while working with acrylic paints. Students will work through projects that explore the vast boundaries comprising the term “abstract art” while further developing their painting skills towards acquiring a stronger visual language. Demonstrations will be provided and critiques will follow assignments.

Notes: It is recommended that students have taken an Introduction to Painting course and have some experience with acrylic paint.

What you will learn

  • Abstract thinking
  • Introduction to contemporary artists/abstract movements
  • Discussion on acrylic mark making and colour mixing
  • Discussions on history of abstract art in Canada and the world.

Materials to Bring

Please keep your receipts to all purchases incase you need to return any materials.

Recommended paint colours:

  • Titanium White
  • Burnt Umber
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Cadmium red
  • Cadmium yellow
  • Titan buff
  • Quinacridone gold
  • Green Gold
  • Ivory Black
  • Vat orange
  • Cobalt blue

Other:

  • Acrylic mediums (thick, thin, gloss, matte, self leveling etc.)

Application tools:

  • Brushes – big, small, house paint brushes
  • Trowels
  • Palette knives
  • Sponges

Extra paper cups etc. for mixing colours

Painting surfaces:

  • Pre-stretched canvas
  • Paper – sketch pad plus a variety of different weight papers would be great
  • Wood – masonite or other wood surfaces
  • Any other surface that might be interesting to paint on

Plus:

All students are advised to bring any collage and reference materials that they think will be useful in creating unique works of art. A great imagination is also essential!
