Trees is a subject many artists have painted throughout history. Its beauty, majesty and symbolism continues to be relevant for many contemporary artists. The likes of John Constable, Emily Carr, Georg Baselitz, and Kim Dorland have reflected on its symbolism and potential for creative expression. This course will proceed in two parts with drawing covering 3 weeks and painting covering the remaining 5 weeks. Student will practice their drawing and painting skills as they work from life and photo-based images.  Skill building in drawing, paint application, and colour mixing will be covered. Students will complete 3 - 4 paintings depending on individual experience. Paint media optional.


Spring 2020:

10 Weeks: Base Tuition: $422 + Materials Fee: $25 = Total: $447

Notes: Students should bring the following for the first day of class: - pad of newsprint - vine or willow charcoal sticks - kneaded eraser, plastic eraser - Digital Camera or smartphone

What you will learn

  • Basic drawing approaches using charcoal and ink
  • Transfer drawings onto canvas
  • Introduction into basic application skills such as blending, drybrush & impasto
  • Textural application using palette knife
  • Execution of underpainting to finished painting.
