Expressive paint-handling is one of the most important qualities of a good work of art. Neglecting the improvement of your brush skills will always hold back your painting progress.  The terms “expressive” or “gestural” are used to describe a method of fine art painting characterized by energetic brushstrokes deliberately emphasizing the sweep of the painter's arm or movement of the hand. In other words, the brushwork expresses the artist's emotions, personality and confidence. This intermediate level ONLINE course will focus on developing brush-handling skills through a series of simple exercises.  We will move on to using these techniques to interpret various subject matter.  All demos will be done using acrylic paint.

Notes: Brian Burnett has been an art instructor at the Toronto School of Art since 1991 and a Fine Arts Faculty member at Centennial College since 2005. In his works, visceral, textured layers of paint coupled with pattern and movement have been constants in Burnett's painting. Through his early period with the Isaacs Gallery (1979–1989) and then with Gallery One (1989–2004), Burnett has displayed a sense of humour and irony in his ongoing investigation into the two-dimensional picture plane both traditionally and digitally. In recent work, he has brought together his passion for painting and digital technology, creating digital paintings using Corel Painter software. Brian Burnett has exhibited regularly in Canada and internationally since 1979, His work has been collected by the City of Toronto, General Electric, Government of Ontario, Art Gallery of Ontario, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Art Gallery of Windsor, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Glenbow Museum, Agnes Etherington Art Gallery and McLaren Art, as well as many Corporate and private collections.
