This course covers the essentials of life drawing in a dynamic format of expressive poses. It is ideal for beginners wanting to establish good technique in proportion, structure and movement and for the aspiring animator. Poses are up to 20 minutes long. It is designed to teach students the skills necessary to render the figure in three dimensions, in both wet and dry media. Instruction in surface anatomy and proportion is included. Class sessions are upbeat with lots of personal attention. Media: Charcoal, conté, ink, newsprint.

Notes: It is recommended that students have taken an Introduction to Drawing course, or equivalent.

What you will learn

  • Capture movement with good proportion and anatomy
  • Pose lengths from 30 secs to 20 mins, with focus on 2, 3, and 5 minute time frame
  • Highly strategized approach to each part of technique  in order for individuals to identify strengths/problem areas to improve quickly.
  • Ideal for preparing for animation portfolio or create independence in drop-in life classes
  • Focus on line with some tone.

Materials to Bring

Please keep all purchase receipts in case you need to return materials.

For each day please bring:

  • 2 pads newsprint 18” x 24” or larger
  • One stick each of the following charcoals: vine or willow charcoal, and black conte HB.
  • Smallest box of coloured chalk pastels made by Nupastel (12 colours for approx. $12 available at Gwartzman’s, Above Ground, Curry’s, and Loomis Art Store.)
  • One kneadable eraser (gray type better than blue type)
  • Drawing clips or bulldog clips
  • Pen or pencil for note-taking
