This  class is a ground-level beginner’s introduction to life drawing. For students with some drawing experience, with its emphasis on gesture and action, it is also an opportunity to refresh your skills.

Each class will involve demos and drawing focused on movement, gesture, simple masses (3-colour process), blind contour, full figure short and longer studies.  

This Life Drawing Basics course will be taught both ONLINE and IN-PERSON out of the TSA studios in the Winter of 2021.

Students registering in this IN-PERSON version of the course will work in the TSA studio. Instructor Thomas Hendry will also be teaching up to 12 students ONLINE in conjuction with those students in studio. It is an experimental HYBRID approach to teaching both online and in-person together and will include a maximum of 5 students in studio

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID 19, special policies and regulations will apply to all IN-PERSON courses at TSA. Students must be in agreement with these health and safety regulations and TSA policies in order to enrol.

Materials to Bring

Please keep your receipts to all purchases in case you need to return any materials.

Students will supply their own materials (paper, ballpoint pen & pencil, conte crayon). Depending on availability, there are Dollar Store/Walmart/Staples alternatives for all exercises.

  • Paper: newsprint ideal, other sketchbook or photocopier bond okay
  • Drawing tools: conte crayon, charcoal, soft pencil or charcoal pencil
  • Kneaded eraser
  • One stick each of red-brown, yellow and blue chalk pastel (Nupastel or Gallery semi-hard pastels are good. If unavailable, an 8-pack of Crayola wax crayons can be a substitute)
  • Plus any drawing materials that you may already have
