This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of drawing. Emphasis will be placed on observational drawing, the development of perceptual skills and technical facility, as well as the exploration of drawing as an expressive medium and conceptual tool. Through in-class assignments and exercises, students will explore fundamentals of drawing such as negative and positive space, proportion, line, contour, value, volume, natural perspective, gesture, composition and mark making. A variety of drawing media will be used throughout the course to familiarize students with a range of materials and their possibilities. Critique, discussions, presentations and demonstrations will be fundamental to the working and learning structure of the class.


 

Notes: This course also studies the human figure; a model (in athletic attire) will be used.

What you will learn

  • In a professional studio atmosphere students will learn to draw with wet and dry media on various supports including charcoal, pastel, pencil, ink and watercolour.
  • Through traditional and experimental methods students will draw from life (model), objects, scenes and imagination learning about line, contour, texture, value, negative and positive space, perspective, colour and composition.
  • Demonstrations of materials and their application and introductions to various artists working in the field of drawing will help students to place their own creations in a contemporary and historical context.
  • Individual and group critiques as well as showcasing their work will help students to improve their skills and learn about the importance of process in art making.
