This figure sculpture course will be focusing on portrait and facial expressions working from the life model and using a step-by-step classical approach. This course is for those who wish to gain a stronger understanding of human head proportions, structure, expressions and animation. Looking closely at the anatomy of the head we will learn to simplify its complex forms into basic and then more refined planes. Students will learn how to capture the likeness of a person and create convincing facial expressions. While all are welcome to work on a full head, beginners will have the possibility to focus initially on parts of the face by sculpting facial features individually, such as nose, mouth, ear and eye and then move on to sculpting a full face. Multiple face studies are a great option for those who wish to focus on facial expressions. We will be looking particularly at five basic facial expressions from which many others can be recreated: Neutral, Happy, Sad, Angry and Surprised. Students with previous sculpting experience could also choose to do a portrait of a family member working from photographs and other 3D reference models provided by the instructor.

Suitable for all levels of experience.
