Create cups, bowls and jugs using the slip casting method. Students will learn slab building, coil building and working with push and slump moulds and supports to create abstract sculpture, cups, bowls and more. We will also experiment with pre-made plaster moulds and do some slip casting of cups, bowls and vases and spheres etc. to use in sculpture. The pieces that have been cast can also be embellished and developed with attached hand-built parts. We will look at how to attach parts, how to make hollow forms, and how to plan ahead when building pieces with multiple parts. We will also explore surface texture with sgraffito (scratching and carving the surface) and using interesting found objects. We will join the tradition of ceramic artists who have been seeking unique forms in vases, bowls, cups and sculpture since 8000 BC and see where this adventure will take us. Whether working on functional or abstract pieces, students will investigate how we can re-imagine the use of the ceramic vessel and explore how it feels in one's hands or on one's lips.
