Dye, Print, Repeat

This six week course explores a range of surface design techniques from around the world. While being introduced to both the historical and contemporary contexts, students will learn several different ways to create pattern on paper and textiles. We will use a variety of dyes, inks and resists to explore the meaning of pattern and how it can be applied in a larger wearable and decorative art context. Leaving room to explore and experiment, students will have access to the necessary equipment to gain a fundamental knowledge of each pattern design technique and will be encouraged to incorporate pattern into their own practice.

10 Weeks: Base Tuition: $422 + Materials Fee: $75 = Total: $497

What you will learn

  • Fabric Marbling, Natural Dyeing, Block Printing, Shibori Dyeing, Batik, Silk Painting and Suminagashi.
  • Students will learn about the different types of repeat patterns as well as monotypes and single-image prints.
  • The course will cover how to prepare textiles for dyeing/printing, the processes involved in each technique and how to preserve the textiles afterwards.
  • Throughout the class, students will create a sample book of all the different techniques with detailed notes so they can explore them further.

Materials to bring

  • Fabric scissors and paper scissors
  • Fabrics (natural fibres such as cotton, silk and linen)
  • Clothing and accessories (preferably in light colours or white)
  • Natural dye-stuffs such as onion skins (will be specified in class)
  • Pencils and sketchbook
  • Metal ruler and exacto knife
  • A binder for organizing samples

Materials provided

  • Marbling dyes, natural dyes, silk dye and cotton dye
  • Marbling chemicals
  • Linoleum squares
  • Fabric and paper
  • Needles and thread
  • Resists: water-based, wax
  • Cutting mats, mortar and pestle, carving tools, drying rack, iron, dye pots, wax pots, burner and other studio equipment.
