This course will focus on the basic techniques of throwing on the potter's wheel. Students will learn the techniques to create basic shapes and functional designs on the wheel. Learn how make cups, bowls, vases and other simple forms. For those with a little more experience with clay, explore other forms such as teapots, bottles, lidded pieces and more. Surface decoration using various techniques will be demonstrated and explored. Carving, slip trailing, underglazing/coloured slip decoration and glazing techniques will all be part of this fun and informational ceramics course.


In Fall 2020, this course will be offered in 2 Parts - each 5 weeks long. These courses can be taken as stand alone courses or Part 2 can be taken as a continuation of Part 1, to further explore the medium.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID 19, special policies and regulations will apply. Students must be in agreement with these health and safety regulations and TSA's policies in order to enrol.

Fall 2020: 5 Weeks: Base Tuition: $264 + Materials Fee: $25 = Total: $289.00

 

 

Notes: For Fall 2020: The $25 materials fee includes 10 lbs of Cone 6 stoneware clay, all firings and use of glazes on site. Additional bags of clay are available for purchase at TSA (note: all clay used at TSA, must be purchased from TSA). Students must bring their own tools for use in the studio. These are available to purchase through specialty retailers or a basic kit can be purchased from TSA. Please see Materials below for details.

What you will learn

  • Learn about creating in clay on the potter's wheel. 
  • Get hands-on training in the basics of working in clay: wedging, centering, throwing various forms and trimming while learning to create functional or sculptural pieces.
  • For more experienced students, explore larger and more complex forms, like lidded pieces, teapots and serving pieces.
  • Learn to decorate your pieces using a variety of surface decoration techniques including carving, slip trailing, underglaze and glazing.

  • Your own apron
  • Paint brushes
  • Basic pottery tool kit likes the ones available from Tuckers Pottery Supply or Aboveground Art Supplies and any of your own favourite pottery/sculpting tools. A basic ceramic tool kit will be available to purchase at TSA (limited quantities).
