Students will explore a variety of ceramic handbuilding techniques to create ceramic art - functional, sculptural or decorative.  Techniques such as slip and score, pinching, rolling, draping and coiling will be demonstrated with special attention given to exploring textures and surface treatments. Decoration with underglaze and glazes will complete your ceramic creations. Suitable for beginners and those with previous clay experience.


12 Weeks: Base Tuition: $495 + Materials Fee: $45 = Total: $540

10 Weeks: Base Tuition: $422 + Materials Fee: $45 = Total: $467

Notes: $45 materials fee includes a bag of Cone 6 Stoneware clay (20lbs), all firings, use of glazes and tools on site. Additional bags of clay are available for purchase at TSA (Note: all clay used at TSA must be purchased from TSA)

What you will learn

  • Working with (water based) clay as an expressive medium to create functional, decorative and/or sculptural pieces.
  • Handbuilding techniques through demonstrations and hands-on discovery.
  • Surface decoration techniques such as texture, underglaze techniques, glazing.
  • Understanding of how ceramic pieces are created from a lump of clay to a finished piece.

A basic pottery tool kit like these from Tucker’s Pottery Supply in Markham or Pottery Supply House tool kit: https://www.psh.ca/index.php?item_id=TF199 in Oakville or Above Ground Art Supply (several Toronto locations):

  • Your own apron (clay is messy)
  • Paint brushes - new for detailed painting/worn brushes for different techniques
  • Small washcloth or tea towel
