This Mixed Media Portraiture class is designed for students of all levels, from beginners to those who have experience with portraiture and wish to explore new approaches with mixed media.  The goal is an exploratory approach in drawing and painting human portraiture from life.

The first half of this course will be devoted to gaining and honing drawing skills to capture  the human face focused on facial anatomy, observational measurements and value rendering. 

The second half will focus on the creative process, building on new skills, broadening your artistic voice and creating portraits using a variety of wet and dry media including oil pastels, acrylic paint and mediums.  A contemporary approach to portraiture.

What you will learn

  • How to draw the human face from life

Materials to Bring

  • Small jar jesso - Glue stick
  • Set of inexpensive acrylics (Titanium white, cobalt blue, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, Alizarin crimson)
  • Set of inexpensive oil pastels (set of 6)
  • Set of graphite pencils (HB and variety of B) 
  • Scissors
  • 4 sheets Strathmore watercolor paper 22” x 30”, 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper
  • 2 small canvases (consult this before purchasing)
  • 2 bulldog clips ( for holding your paper pad or papers on drawing board)
  • Erasers (white, pink, kneadable)
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Ruler (24”)
  • Masking tape
  • Sketchbook for notes and homework!
  • Utility and precision knife
  • Spray fixative (this could be used for fixing your charcoal and conte drawings and you only can use it outside of class in open air)
  • Portfolio case for your 18”x 24” drawing board and drawings - Additional materials required for special projects
