This course is a follow-up to Introduction to Portrait Drawing and will explore traditional as well as abstract techniques related to portraiture. The first quarter of the course focuses on traditional portraiture techniques such as understanding the basic proportions of the human head and adding a five value system in rendering and developing a portrait. Composition, colour exploration and artistic intent will be covered. In the remaining term, explorations in mixed media will follow giving students a new avenue for artistic expression while refining their technical skills in portraiture.

What you will learn


  • Classic guideline grid to draw facial features and details
  • How to deconstruct natural proportions to achieve abstraction
  • Combine applications of different wet and dry mediums to enhance artists visual vocabulary

Materials to Bring

  • Small jar jesso - Glue stick
  • Set of inexpensive acrylics (Titanium white, cobalt blue, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow medium, Alizarin crimson)
  • Set of inexpensive oil pastels (set of 6)
  • Set of graphite pencils (HB and variety of B) 
  • Scissors
  • 4 sheets Strathmore watercolor paper 22” x 30”, 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper
  • 2 small canvases (consult this before purchasing)
  • 2 bulldog clips ( for holding your paper pad or papers on drawing board)
  • Erasers (white, pink, kneadable)
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Ruler (24”)
  • Masking tape
  • Sketchbook for notes and homework!
  • Utility and precision knife
  • Spray fixative (this could be used for fixing your charcoal and conte drawings and you only can use it outside of class in open air)
  • Portfolio case for your 18”x 24” drawing board and drawings - Additional materials required for special projects
