This class will explore extending the surface of the painting into the three-dimensional, linking the sculptural aspects through the consideration of various aspects of the painting: its conceptual basis, the design elements used, the materiality of the paint and narrative ideas.  We will begin by making small thickly painted works and progress to larger scale paintings/sculptures and works in series.

Each progression will focus on a particular aspect of the painting – for example, extending the line and colour out from the canvas or board using ready-made or created materials or extending a theme or object painted into the space beyond the canvas.

This is a studio class that will also include weekly short presentations about a range of artists whose work straddles borders between sculpture and painting: from Gordon Raynor, Joyce Weiland and Robert Rauschenberg to contemporary Canadian artists such as Fiona Kinsella, Gretchen Sankey, Suzy Oliveira, Jennifer Lefort, Gillian Iles and others.

Students can work in either acrylic or oil paint. Materials will be dependent on the approach that each person will take and will be discussed during the first class.

Tuition: $335
