• Introduction-Intermediate
  • Painting

In this ONLINE course, students will experiment with mark-making, layering, colour control and some modification strategies. We will explore the fundamentals of tone and colour (and its relationship to surfaces) with a focus on the relationship between what we see and what we make. Using composition to help set the stage to connect with abstract art, students will work with a range of approaches designed to unlock greater fluency and more forthright decisions about transposing realism to abstraction. Much of the work will be gestural abstraction with emphasis on rhythm, contrast and spontaneity, and learning how to increase a sense of depth and space in a single artwork.

By the end of this course, students will have created a number of paintings which explore different concepts of abstract art towards building their personal style. They will also further develop an understanding of colour history. Modern Art History will be used as reference, specifically Abstract Expressionism in relation to German Expressionism. This course will also be sprinkled with a few references to Minimalism and Contemporary Art trends today. All the lessons learned during the course can be applied to all art-making genres.

This course is intended for beginner and intermediate levels in abstract painting.
