The fascinating history of creating with pen, ink and wash dates back to ancient China. We combine ancient techniques with the contemporary world of markers and pen to encourage the exploration of a timeless, expressive medium. We will explore expressive lines, washes and textures. Demonstrations are an integal part of this course which will help inform, guide and support your artistic journey into mark making.

Notes: Jacqueline Treloar, an English-born artist and educator, has been teaching at the Toronto School of Art since 2006. Before moving to Canada, she spent twelve years running a textile design studio in Northern Italy. Treloar’s work has won her several accolades over the years, including the Ontario Premier’s Award of Excellence, and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals, journals and books, such as Fibrearts, Surfacing, Ontario Craft, Azure and Toronto Life. Since coming to Canada in 1984, Treloar has presented her work in exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council, the John B. Aird Gallery, the Homer Watson Gallery, the Museum for Textiles, the Art Gallery of Mississauga and the Library and Gallery in Cambridge, among other institutions.

What you will learn

  • To understand the fascinating history of these mediums dating from 960 China and Islamic calligraphy forms. The development of pen and ink artwork in Western drawing, dates from the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Canterbury and Winchester illuminated manuscripts of the 9th century, whose hallmarks include lively figures and animals, decorative foliage, and exquisite calligraphy.
  • Find out what your tools do and experiment with them  
  • Learn and experiment with shading with hatching, cross hatching, stippling
  • Discover the power of gesture and mark making
  • Experiment with different coloured paper supports
  • Use and discover graded washes with black and white and colour
  • Blend colour and line with markers

The necessities for your first class are in bold.

  • A straight pen holder and a selection of different nibs is necessary
  • Ink: India ink, Chinese white and a few colored inks, pencils and sponges. Waterproof inks are best for line work while water-soluble ink should be used for washes.

Graphite Pencil: Derwent water soluble pencils are the best
