This course provides both beginner and advanced students with practical and technical knowledge of the uses of oil paint. Designed to complement Introduction to Painting, this course will familiarize students with oil paints, a range of mediums, and their specific functions. Demonstrations relating to technique will be ongoing, detailing both traditional and contemporary styles of applications and the aesthetic qualities specific to each. Upon completion, students should possess a greater sensitivity to and knowledge of the medium that will take them beyond their formative training. Issues of health and safety relating to the use of handling oil paints and mediums will also be discussed.

The following colours are recommended for their versatility in providing the broadest and most effective range of colour mixing, without waste or duplication. Depending on financial resources, please endeavor to have the following:
Solvents: Please have a large bottle of odourless solvent. Attention: no citrus solvents please.
Walnut oil and walnut alkyd will be distributed to the class individually. These are the basic mediums that you should have for every class.
Please have a large palette pad no smaller than 12 x 16 inches.
An assortment of small palette knives.
Attention: Please be punctual for the first day of class. A media review will begin promptly at 10 minutes past the start of class.
