For those with experience with clay and an interest in food, this course will focus on how to create functional tablewear and larger forms for food serving/display. Attention will be paid to refining design of tablewear taking a close look at form, function, esthetics, color, texture and finishes. This course will help take your designs to the next level, focusing in on the elements of design while honing your throwing and handbuilding skills.

12 Weeks: Base Tuition: $495 + Material Fee: $45 | Total: $540

Notes: $45 materials fee includes a bag of Cone 6 stonewear clay (20lbs), all firings, use of glazes and tools on site. Additonal bags of clay are available for purchase at TSA (note: all clay used at TSA, must be purchased from TSA)

What you will learn

  • Develop your design skills as they relate to creating your vision in table/ serving wear in clay on the wheel and through hand-building.
  • Learn new techniques to create your own table/serving wear including large plates, bowls, platters, casseroles, steamers, double walled wear, lidded pieces, and more.
  • Explore finishing techniques using carving, slip trailing, slips and colored clays, drawing, painting with underglaze pencils and underglaze, as well as more traditional finishes.

Materials to Bring

  • your own apron
  • a few plastic bowls
  • paint brushes
  • basic pottery tool kit likes the ones available from Tuckers Pottery Supply or Aboveground Art Supplies and any of your own favourte pottery/sculpting tools. TSA will have tools for you to use on site.
