This course explores the process of creating collage journals, travelogues and altered books using a wide range of collage and mixed media processes. It is an exploration of the relationship of image, text and personal narrative in the sketch book form. This course focuses on collage journals and travelogues in the fall term and collage journals and altered books in the winter term.
Sketchbooks and intriguing found books will be reconfigured through collage, drawing and paint and ink processes. We will work with unusual collage papers and fabrics as well as found images and text. The collage journals can work for daily art practice, in preparation for travel, or as a thematic exploration.
We will transform photo based imagery through cutting and reassembly, create under-paintings for collage and drawing, build layers and transparency, add inserts, envelopes and tags, make simple photo transfers, use text and narrative, fabric and stitching. Much of our explorations can be adapted for travelling and small studio practice.
