Pastels pose a number of critical challenges.  Pastel particles are difficult to set into place.  They can be easily smudged if they are not “fixed.”  Most of the Fixatives on the market are extremely toxic. They will also will darken and dull the colour.  Inhaling pastel dust can also pose a serious health risk.  Heavy Body Acrylics can be an effective alternative.  Using a technique called “Dry Brush” they can mimic the velvety look of traditional pastels without the downsides.  To create a toothy, textured ground, two GOLDEN products will be used: Acrylic Ground for Pastels and Micaceous Iron Oxide.
